Luxury pickups are very popular right now. I test drove a GMC 1500 AT4X AEV, one of GM’s most expensive half-tons. It was luxurious, drove like a car with self-adjusting Multimatic SDDV shocks and piggyback fluid controls, and handled well off-road and on pavement. Full-grain leather seats, both rows are heated, the front seats are cooled, and the steering wheel is heated. And my favorite diesel, the Duramax 3.0L inline-six, ran smoothly, quietly, and had great fuel economy. We towed a 7,000-pound trailer.

Yes, luxury, and for only $88,585 (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price). The engine is a Duramax 3.0L turbocharged inline-six diesel that makes 305 horsepower and 495 torque at 2,750 rpm, a true torque monster. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. You can get this diesel engine for the same price as the 6.2L V8 gasoline engine. This truck is rated to tow 8,500 pounds of trailers. If it were a simpler truck, it could tow 12,000 pounds. But this is a tough off-road vehicle. The truck comes with a factory 2-inch lift kit, 33-inch tires, and the AEV package with boron steel skid plates on both differentials, transfer case, and fuel tank. The front and rear bumpers are custom AEV metal with tow hooks. The wheels are made of black high-gloss aluminum with 12 spokes

I’ve seen this 3.0L Duramax diesel beat the EPA’s stated highway gas mileage by 20 miles per gallon. I don’t like the kickstands, if you need that kind of off-road protection they’re helpful. Most of us try to use them as running boards but they’re too narrow to rest your feet on. The console-mounted gearshift is awkward, hard to remember which button is for reverse and which is for park. Towing mirrors are an option but the standard ones are wider than average, which works well if you’re towing a flatbed truck but isn’t efficient with a cargo or camper trailer. The brake controller is in a good place on the center console. The 15-inch head-up display is a good safety device to help you keep your eyes on the road. One interesting feature on this diesel is that the exhaust brake and tow modes activate together and can’t be separated.
