Roman Polanski’s Chinatown Long considered one of the greatest films of all time, it is a pinnacle of neo-noir nihilism that has stood the test of time 50 years after its release. The film offers a multi-layered narrative that tackles themes of corruption, power and morality, all under the virtuoso performances of Jack Nicholson as private investigator Jake Gittes and Faye Dunaway as Evelyn Mulwray. The ending of this film will blow the audience away.

The 13 best neo-noir films of all time, ranked

Suspense, stunning cinematography and a dark atmosphere are essential to the best neo-noirs.

The plot of Chinatown may be quite complicated, but in typical classic noir mystery fashion, it all starts with a girl. It begins with detective JJ “Jake” Gittes, who is hired by a woman claiming to be Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband Hollis Mulwray on suspicion of infidelity. However, the film offers many twists and turns and brings to light many dark truths and shocking revelations. Chinatown will stream on Max on July 1st.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Streaming on July 1st

Groundbreaking for his portrayal, Brokeback Mountain made a big impression upon its release, being loved by critics and winning three Oscars. The film follows Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two cowboys who develop a complex romantic and sexual relationship in a difficult time and place for gays: 1960s Wyoming. The story spans decades, with the two hiding their feelings from family and their annual reunions being their only respite to be themselves.

While the film was a landmark in the history of the LGBTQ+ community, it resonates with universal themes of forbidden love and sacrifice that make it appealing to a wider audience. The film also beautifully captures Wyoming in the 1960s, with sharp visual direction and a perfectly constructed score. If that’s not enough to hook you, Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger deliver some of the best performances of their respective careers. Brokeback Mountain will stream on Max on July 1st.

Ladybird (2017)

Streaming on July 1st

Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut showed that she had what it takes to become a dominant creative voice in the industry. Ladybug is a must-see coming-of-age film that offers a poignant and humorous exploration of youth, family and self-discovery. Gerwig achieves this through Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan), who dreams of escaping her hometown to enjoy the charms of the East Coast. Her biggest obstacle is her loving mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), who holds her back.

The film was a critical success and was nominated for five Oscars, three BAFTAs and eight Critics’ Choice Awards. Those who Barbie should do themselves a favor and watch Gerwig’s first film, which remains one of her – if not her – best – works. Ladybug is a gripping and emotionally satisfying experience that will keep audiences entertained long after the credits roll. Ladybug will stream on Max on July 1st.

Signs (2002)

Streaming on July 1st

While The sixth Sense is generally considered M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece, Sign remains one of the director’s most memorable projects. The film follows recently widowed Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) who, after finding crop circles on his farm, slowly discovers that the symbols hide a sinister truth: an impending alien invasion. Graham and his family prepare for the invasion by taking up residence in their home and fighting the mysterious figures as they appear.

Most viewers will remember the iconic scene where a news report shows alien life. Sign has more to offer than just a creepy, pervasive atmosphere in typical Shyamalan style. Viewers will find thoughtful commentary on the nature of faith and the power of human resilience in the face of extreme circumstances. Add to that outstanding performances by Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix and Sign you should have seen it. Sign will stream on Max on July 1st.
