Barcelona confirms sale of defender to PSV Eindhoven

Sergino Dest has left Barcelona and is moving permanently to PSV Eindhoven.

The USMNT full-back was loaned to PSV last season and helped the club reclaim the Eredivisie title from Feyenoord.

He has now signed a permanent contract with them, ending his Barca career after four years at the club.

A statement from Barcelona read: “FC Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Sergino Dest. FC Barcelona will retain a percentage of any future sale.”

PSV’s disclosure statement reads: “Sergino Dest is and will remain PSV. The technically gifted full-back was loaned from FC Barcelona last season. PSV is now taking him on a permanent basis from the Catalans. Sergino signed a four-year contract on Saturday afternoon at the PSV Campus De Herdgang.”

Dest told PSV club channels: “First of all, PSV believes in me and I am very valued here. I have found the club to be incredibly warm, something I have never experienced before. These are important aspects for someone in my situation and give me the confidence that I can rehabilitate myself well here. When the time comes, it is very nice that the game we play here suits me. I am really looking forward to getting playing time again, being important and winning titles.”

Dest revealed in May that he had torn his anterior cruciate ligament, putting a permanent transfer in doubt. However, PSV have decided to complete the deal despite these injury concerns.

PSV football director Earnest Stewart commented on Dest’s injury: “We discussed it internally, but Sergino convinced us so much last season that we definitely didn’t want to miss the chance to take him on permanently. He has so many qualities. The new situation doesn’t change that.”

“He played an important role in the 25th national title. When he came last year, I knew that we were getting a very good player. He has already proven that several times at the highest level. His arrival is a very good start to the transfer summer.”
