Barstow fire chief retires after 42 years of service

Barstow Fire Chief Nick DiNapoli joined the agency as a volunteer firefighter in 1982.

Barstow Fire Chief Nick DiNapoli has retired after more than four decades of service with the Barstow Fire Protection District, officials announced Friday.

DiNapoli, who joined the department as a volunteer firefighter in 1982, is “retiring from his duties,” the department said in a written statement. He was with the fire department for 42 years.

“As Chief DiNapoli retires after over 40 years of service, we sincerely wish him a happy and healthy retirement. We thank him for his unwavering dedication and selfless service, and he will be truly missed by the Barstow community.”

Over the years, he rose through the ranks and eventually became a full-time firefighter, colleagues said.

After leaving the fire service in 1996 to pursue his passion for music, he returned to the Barstow Fire Protection District as a board member in 1997 and continued to serve as a reserve firefighter in 1998.

DiNapoli returned to the force full-time as a captain in 2007.

In 2019, he was promoted to battalion chief and in 2021, he was named deputy fire chief of the department.

DiNapoli was appointed fire chief in 2023, making him “the 9th documented fire chief in the fire district’s 98-year history.”

In addition to his career as a firefighter, DiNapoli is also known for his love of music, especially jazz, rock and opera. He is also a talented singer whose voice is reminiscent of Tony Bennet, colleagues added.
