Rai Benjamin reached the final of the men’s 400 m hurdles and Jalaysiya Smith and Nia Ali advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 100-meter hurdles on day six of the U.S. Track and Field team trials for the 2024 Olympic Games, which took place today (June 28) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Also today, Andre De Grasse won the Canadian title in the men’s 100-meter dash, securing a spot at the Paris Olympics.

  • Rai Benjamin (USC, 2018), the 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the 400m hurdles, easily won the 400m hurdles semifinal with a time of 47.97, making him the top qualifier for Sunday’s final at 5:20 p.m.
  • Junior Jalaysiya Smith and Nia Ali (USC, 2011) were the first Trojans to compete today, and both advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 100m hurdles at 5:04 p.m. on Saturday. The top five would advance automatically, but after eliminations, all runners would advance. Smith finished fifth in her heat with a time of 12.93 (+0.2) and Ali, who said she had a difficult warm-up, simply jogged through and finished with a time of 20.38 (+0.1). Ali won a silver medal in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
  • Second semester Max Thomas achieved a time of 20.81 (+2.5w) and finished 21stst in the semi-finals of the men’s 200 m.
  • Second semester Jassani Carter (22.50), first semester Madison Whyte (23.12), TeeTee Terry (USC, 2021), who had already qualified for the 100 m in Paris, (22.62) and Chandler, Sarah (USC, 2023 – 23.25) failed to advance past the semifinals of the women’s 200m. The top nine made it through and Carter finished and Terry 13th.
  • Isaiah Jewett (USC, 2021 – 1:46.22) and Bobby Poynter (USC, 2023 – 1:48.41) ran in the semifinals of the men’s 800m today but did not advance.

The current and former Trojans who will be in action on Saturday are Nia Ali (Women – 100 m high distance, semi-final), Anna Cockrell (Women – 400 m high distance, semi-final), Jasmine Jones (Women – 400 m H semi-final), Dalilah Muhammad (Women – 400 m H semi-final), Madisen Richards (Women – LJ final), Jalaysiya Smith (B – 100 m H, half mast).

At the Canadian Athletics Trials in Montreal, Canada. –

  • Andre De Grasse (USC, 2015) and Aaron Brown (USC, 2014) finished first and third, respectively, in the 100m final today. Both had times of 10.10 in the semifinals and De Grasse had times of 10.20 (-0.2) and Brown 10.25 (-0.2) in the final. De Grasse receives the only automatic qualifying spot in the Canadian system, as only the event winners are guaranteed, with the rest being determined by committee. De Grasse is a six-time Olympic medalist and Brown is a two-time Olympic medalist.
  • Kyra Constantine (USC, 2021) reached the women’s 400 m final with a time of 52.08.
