The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a Chicago man who allegedly led them on a wild chase through the city of Atlanta.

According to the sheriff’s office, 27-year-old Jimmy Kendal Smith was driving a Toyota Camry on I-75 indefinitely on Friday.

The officer who spotted him tried to stop him, but Smith allegedly sped off, hitting other cars.

Smith led the deputy on a brief pursuit until he was stopped by a PIT maneuver on Capitol Avenue near the Georgia State Capitol. Capitol Police of the Georgia Department of Public Safety assisted in detaining the suspect’s car.

“I can’t say enough how proud I am of our team. They have proven time and time again that they were in the right place at the right time,” said Sheriff Pat Labat. “This reckless driver put lives in danger and thanks to Investigator Moore’s quick action, he was arrested without anyone being hurt.”

Smith was charged with several misdemeanors and one felony, including family assault, trespassing and property damage, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police, willful obstruction of police officers and three counts of hit and run.

He is being held in the Fulton County Jail.
