Chico man arrested on suspicion of stealing ,000 in cash at estate sale

In an update to an entry in recent police logs, a Chico man was arrested June 26 on suspicion of stealing $23,000 in cash from the estate auction of a woman’s residence, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

The owner reported the theft on June 26, believing the estate auction company Pro Sales by Judy had conducted the estate auction while she was in the hospital. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office has this listed in its call logs.

According to Ramsey, 28-year-old David Tyler Bryant of Chico was allegedly part of the estate auction team. He entered the owner’s bedroom despite a “no trespassing” sign and stole $23,000 in cash from a jar under the bed.

Ramsey said Bryant allegedly felt “pangs of conscience” after taking the money, giving it to people on the street and buying expensive items at Walmart, so he asked the Chico Rescue Mission to call police about the theft.

Bryant reportedly returned about $16,500 he had left, and the rescue mission withdrew about $6,500 from its account to give to the victim, Ramsey said.

Bryant has since been released and is scheduled to enter a guilty plea in Butte County Superior Court on July 24.
