CREVE COEUR (25News Now) – A group of cyclists is taking a cross-country tour this summer and leaving their mark along the way.

The Fuller Center for Housing is a national program that aims to provide decent housing to those in need worldwide. Each year, the group cycles across the country as part of its Fuller Center Bicycle Adventure, stopping to help communities.

“The riders usually have a goal in mind and keep coming back after participating, not just for the cycling but also for the opportunity to work with the families. It’s a great experience for everyone,” said ride coordinator Neil Mullikin.

They have been cycling with one goal in mind since May 24. Starting in Seattle, Washington, they stopped in about 30 cities before making their way to Creve Coeur.

Mullikin has been doing this ride for four years and said the cross-country performance is breathtaking but does not depend on the ride itself.

“By far the families. I’ve met families whose lives have gone through a huge change,” Mullikin said.

While in Tazewell County, they helped repaint the Creve Coeur Community Center and the home of U.S. Air Force veteran Jeff Sturch.

“I needed this 10 years ago when I became disabled, and I was planning to paint it in the fall, but I never got around to it. So I’ve needed it for at least 15 years,” Sturch said.

Sturch said it felt like a heavy weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

“Before, it looked pretty battered, the paint was peeling off.”

Sturch only learned about the local Fuller Center in January, and since then they have helped him repair and upgrade several parts of his home.

“I’m surprised they just volunteer like that,” Sturch said.

The group will continue its community service stops when it travels to Washington, DC through August 3.
