BELTON, Missouri (KCTV) – Police officers are searching for the driver of an early morning chase that ended near a Kansas City park before he was lost from sight.

The Cass County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office said that at approximately 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, officers attempted to stop a vehicle near I-49 and 155th Street in Belton for a traffic violation.

As the vehicle headed north on the highway, troopers say they activated the hazard lights to try to stop the driver. The vehicle was slow to respond but eventually stopped.

After the deputy exited his vehicle, the driver sped away, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy ran back to his own vehicle to pursue the suspect. The driver continued to speed north on the interstate at an erratic speed.

After the vehicle came to a stop near a playground in Iser Park in Kansas City, police said the suspect jumped out and tried to flee. There they noticed the suspect had a firearm in his hand.

The sheriff’s office said multiple agencies responded, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives with a sniffer dog and air support, but the suspect eluded them.

On Saturday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said Kansas City, Missouri police had taken over the case. No further information was released.
