Explanation of the ending of the film “Somewhere Quiet”

Somewhere quietThe ending raises more questions than it answers and leaves fans perplexed.

Director: Olivia West Lloyd, Somewhere quiet tells the story of Meg (Jennifer Kim), who is recovering from a brutal kidnapping.

Meg and her husband Scott (Kentucker Audley) head to a remote Cape Cod estate to recover from their traumatic past, but things take a turn for the worse when they realize they are not alone.

Somewhere quiet had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 8, 2023, and was released in U.S. theaters on February 2. The film is now available to stream on Hulu.

Meg’s supposed road to recovery in a remote rest house with her husband turns into a nightmare after the arrival of an unexpected guest, the secret presence of a mysterious old woman, and a series of hallucinations.

Something quiet is a film about isolation, betrayal, and coming to terms with past trauma as Meg tries to distinguish between reality and falsehood while developing a sense of everything around her.

In the film, Meg and Scott’s vacation is quickly disrupted by the arrival of Madelin (Marin Ireland), Scott’s cousin, who is callous to Meg’s traumatic past experiences. To make matters worse, Madelin’s flirtatious advances toward Scott leave Meg (and the audience) unsure if she really is his cousin or if it’s all just a ruse.

In addition to Madelin, Meg also has to deal with the ghost of an old woman she keeps seeing, and she is almost taken advantage of by a stranger she meets on the beach.

Meg’s problems ultimately led her to no longer trust anyone, including Scott. She wants to find out who is behind her kidnapping, and it destroyed her marriage and her self-esteem.

Meg’s uncomfortable situation is compounded by Madelin’s crazy antics and Scott’s continued denial of her discomfort.

Much of the film is spent laughing and having fun with Madelin and Scott, making Meg more of an outsider than a wife.

The fact that Madelin and Scott are mostly comfortable and don’t understand Meg’s fears makes it seem like they either have something to do with her kidnapping or that they just don’t care at all.

Meg takes matters into her own hands and tries to get home on a dirt bike, but accidentally kills Madelin’s dog.

This terrible accident ultimately leads to a tense confrontation between Meg, Madelin and Scott where everything is laid on the table.

It turns out that Scott had a copy of a video containing the ransom note for Meg, but was unable to watch it in time as he was at the cabin visiting Madelin. He also pointed out that he was already grieving for Meg, having come to terms with the fact that the police would no longer be able to find her.

While Meg is furious about this revelation, Scott’s aggression takes over, as he tried to end Meg’s life by pointing a shotgun at her and eventually strangling her.

Nevertheless, Meg manages to escape and it appears that she killed Scott in the process, which ultimately led to her escape.

Somewhere quiet ends with Meg taking a stranger’s car and driving home, but she soon realizes that she has nowhere to go because of the mess she has created.

The harrowing final shot of Meg alone with police sirens blaring in the background perfectly captures how the protagonist is weighed down by the drastic decisions she makes because of her paranoia.

Somewhere quiet can be streamed on Hulu.
