Scene from “When First We Practice to Cheate” in front of the Oak Street Mill

July 11. A new feature-length film by indie filmmaker Glenn Roberson was shot “quite extensively” inside and outside the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius, as well as at the Old Town Public House.

“When First We Practice to Deceive” is available on half a dozen streaming services, including Tubi, the leading free ad-supported entertainment streamer.

The film is the first feature-length production for Roberson, who lives in the Mallard Creek/University area of Charlotte. The 61-year-old attended Statesville High School and the University of South Carolina.

As an entrepreneurial filmmaker from the Charlotte area, Roberson wanted to support the local film industry as much as possible. The film, which was self-funded, cost $100,000 to produce.

“I tried my best to create a project that showcased local and regional actors and featured great local musicians and locations,” he said. “I was fortunate to bring in new and more experienced talent who really brought the story I wrote to life.”

He also worked with UNC Charlotte’s film studies program, bringing along professionals as well as some young graduates as crew members.

“The original concept of the film was changed several times as I incorporated aspects of storytelling that interested me and that I hope will also captivate audiences,” he said.

The film had to be entertaining and have enough suspense to move the plot forward, while containing minimal violence or foul language, said Roberson, who ran a photography studio at the Oak Street Mill.

Other filming locations include Charlotte, Troutman and Mount Pleasant.

The actors include James Roseman, Aubrey Rogers, Sofia Chambon and Kyle Riggs.
