The annual UP Football All Star Game will be played today at the Superior Dome, kicking off at 1 p.m. Local players participating include Danny Marcotte of Lake Linden-Hubbell and Easton Legault of Ontonagon on Team Red. Alan Bjorn, Cam Anderson, Travis Eck and Travis Hyrkas of Calumet, Gabe Popko and Sam Roberts of Lake Linden-Hubbell, Wyatt Jenkins of Houghton and Redd Strong of Ontonagon will compete for Team Black. Team Red is coached by Chad Brandt of Menominee. Team Black is led by former Finlandia University head coach Travis Wiltzius, who is now on the staff at Gladstone High School. His assistants include Tim Driscoll, also a former Finlandia head coach who is now the head coach at Houghton, Houghton assistant coach Eli Louma and Calumet head coach Josh Frantti.


Carson Kelly’s two-run home run in the second inning was just enough to give the Tigers a 2-1 win over the White Sox last night. Jack Flaherty pitched into the sixth inning, allowing Chicago’s only run and striking out eight players.

The Tigers host the White Sox this afternoon. Kenta Maeda will face Drew Thorpe. Coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

Kerry Carpenter is allowed to resume baseball activities. He was out of action for a month due to a stress fracture in his spine. His possible return to the Tigers will take another month.

The Brewers lost to the Padres 9-5. Milwaukee took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning with RBI singles from Brice Turang, William Contreras, Christian Yelich and Rhys Hoskins. San Diego then scored eight runs in the next four innings to win the game.

The Brewers play again today in San Diego. Carlos Rodriguez will throw against Randy Vásquez.

Milwaukee has brought Jakob Junis back from the injured list. He was out of action for most of the season with a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder. To make room, Bradley Blalock was sent back to Nashville.


The Oilers forced a seventh game in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 5-1 defeat of the Panthers last night. The Cup will be decided Monday night in Florida. It is only the third time in history that a team has lost the first three games of the series and then come back to even the score. The other teams to do so were the 1942 Maple Leafs and the 1945 Red Wings. Both teams lost in their final games.

Roller Derby

Keweenaw Roller Derby welcomes Grand Raggidy from Grand Rapids tonight at the Colosseum. Doors open at 5pm, skating begins at 6pm. Tickets are just $5 (cash or card) and kids under 10 are free.
