The mayor of the northern French city of Rouen shared a photo of a column of smoke rising from the Gothic monument, suggesting that a fire broke out in the cathedral’s tower on Thursday.

Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol wrote on X that the “origin of the fire is currently unknown” and that “all public resources” would be mobilized to fight it.

The alarm was raised at noon (10:00 GMT), according to local fire department SDIS76, and 33 vehicles and 63 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

It was initially unclear whether the tower’s wooden structure was on fire.

A fire in the wooden frame of the roof was the cause of the massive damage to the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 2019, the repairs of which are only now almost complete.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption has been evacuated and a security area has been set up, the prefecture said.

People should “stay away to give rescue workers the opportunity to do their job,” it said.

According to the website, construction of Rouen Cathedral began in the 12th century, and work lasted several centuries before it took on its current form.
