During the recent Advanced Clean Transportation Expo, a showcase of the world’s latest electric vehicle and clean fuel technologies, Canadian commercial vehicle manufacturer Lion Electric Company unveiled its new all-electric Class 8 commercial truck called the Lion8 Tractor, CleanTechnica reported.

Scheduled to launch in mid-2024, the Lion8 tractor is “carefully engineered for performance and endurance,” according to CleanTechnica, and will have a range of up to 275 miles.

“The Lion8 tractor embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in modern freight transportation,” said Lion CEO and founder Marc Bedard in a press release. “We are excited to introduce a vehicle that not only meets but exceeds the rigorous requirements of today’s transportation needs, as it sets a new standard in the electric truck market, combining performance, efficiency and environmental sustainability. Our purpose-built electric vehicles are the cornerstone of our vision for a sustainable future.”

Although electric cars have become more common in recent years as consumers opt for options that produce far less overall planet-heating air pollution than traditional gasoline-powered cars, electric semi-trucks are still in the early stages of development and adoption.

Although Tesla has managed to produce a small number of electric semi-trailers and deliver some to PepsiCo, the vast majority of semi-trailers on the road today are diesel trucks, which have a massive impact on the environment.

According to TruckLabs, “Class 8 trucks are responsible for about a quarter of the U.S. transportation sector’s greenhouse gas emissions, which amount to over 400 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.”

Therefore, the introduction of new fully electric Class 8 tractors such as the Lion8 tractor is a very positive development.

“Looks good, seems to be Canadian,” wrote one commenter.

Another expressed concerns about the timing of the truck’s launch in terms of its ability to gain market share: “It would have been nice if Tesla had come to market a little earlier with the Semi. They are now in the very early stages of building a factory to build it.”
