Tornado knocks down trees and damages house

A confirmed EF1 tornado tore down trees and damaged at least one home on Jupiter Island on Wednesday.

“The tornado most likely touched down just west of US 1 and continued east along Bridge Road before crossing the St. Lucie River and reaching Jupiter Island,” said William Ulrich of the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

Jupiter Island was inaccessible due to fallen trees on Bridge Road in Hobe Sound as a result of a possible tornado on June 12, 2024.

The storm damaged Bridge Road, which connects Hobe Sound to Jupiter Island, so authorities had to close it.

Driving through Jupiter Island, we saw leaves and branches scattered along the side of the road.

“It was dark and ominous and raining when we arrived and we knew it was going to be a bad day,” said Jupiter Island Commissioner Anne Scott. “We knew it was going to be really bad.”

Scott said they were holding a commissioner meeting Wednesday morning when the storm hit.

“At about 10:30 a.m. it got really dark, the wind picked up and then our alarms started going off and lights started flashing,” Scott said. “It looked like someone had thrown mud on the walls of City Hall. The movement in the trees was really dramatic, unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

When WPTV drove to the city hall building, two large trees had fallen.

Scott said as she was leaving City Hall, she noticed her property had been damaged.

A large tree was knocked over, blocking one end of their driveway, and at the other end, branches were broken off and hanging above the ground.

“My neighbor hasn’t put his roof on yet, and the tiles are all still stacked on the roof,” Scott said. “My backyard patio furniture was on its way to the beach.”

At the back of their property, at least three palm trees were damaged, one of which fell on their guest house.

“But there’s a garbage can here, so I don’t think it landed here. I do think it landed here,” Scott said, pointing to a tree on a house. “I think it landed by the city hall, but it must have just barely missed here.”

Scott said there was no major damage to her main home, but she will check to see what her insurance does and does not cover.
