A good week got even better for the Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday when in-state running back Jeff Overton announced his commitment to the Hokies. Overton was Virginia Tech’s primary running back and was the Hokies’ sixth commitment in the last eight days.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Overton comes from Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria, Virginia, and is the No. 22 player in Virginia for 2025 according to 247Sports. Overton previously played at Freedom High in Woodbridge before transferring earlier this year to play for his uncle, who is the head coach.

Here is Overton’s announcement:

Here Overton makes it official on his X-page:

Overton is Virginia Tech’s 12th recruit for the Class of 2025. He chose the Hokies over fellow finalists South Carolina and Maryland, marking a recruiting victory for VT head coach Brent Pry.

What kind of player do the Hokies get with Overton?

Overton made an immediate impact as a freshman, rushing for 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns. After another productive season as a sophomore, Overton put up video game numbers for Freedom in 2023, rushing for 2,713 yards, 41 touchdowns and averaging 13 yards per attempt. Overton won Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award and led the Eagles to a 14-0 record and second consecutive Class 6 state championship.

It’s surprising that Overton doesn’t get a higher rating from recruiting services. And it’s not just about stats, either. Overton’s film is fantastic despite strong competition.

Virginia Tech has done a much better job recruiting Northern Virginia, as Overton is the Hokies’ fifth commitment from NOVA this cycle.

Welcome home, Jeff.
