  • The controversy surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi stems from the way it treats Luke Skywalker. As this was his first story since Return of the Jedi, it was clear that there would be controversy.
  • The film’s marketing did not reflect its subversiveness and resulted in fans’ expectations not being met.
  • Many of Rian Johnson’s decisions regarding Rey’s parentage, Snoke’s character, and Luke’s storyline caused controversy, as fans were upset that common theories were not taken into account.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is undoubtedly the most controversial film in the franchise, and there are several reasons for this. When the film was released in 2017, many were curious to see how war of stars‘ sequel trilogy would continue. Although this excitement led to a strong box office success, it immediately became clear that The Last Jedi divided fans, some called it the worst rated war of stars The film has been called by others a bold and unique continuation of the Skywalker saga.

Unfortunately war of stars Franchise is no stranger to controversy. Since 1977, every film in the franchise has been criticized, especially the prequel trilogy and The Last Jedis predecessor, Star Wars: The Force AwakensThis division is expected to continue with the coming war of stars films, although many hope that the initial criticism will subside and the films will receive a more moderate perception over time. One film in the franchise where this has not yet happened is Star Wars: The Last JediMany aspects of the film are still hotly debated seven years after its release.

Every Star Wars backlash I have ever seen has basically been about the same thing

The Star Wars fandom is notorious for its controversy. After over 30 years as a fan, I think I’ve finally understood the problem…

It was the first Star Wars film with Luke Skywalker since 1983

Luke Skywalker’s storyline remains the most criticized part of The Last Jedi

Without a doubt, the way Luke Skywalker was treated is the reason why many people despised him, still despise him, and will continue to do so. Star Wars: The Last JediIn live action war of stars, The Last Jedi was the first time in over 40 years that Luke Skywalker had a real story. Since Return of the Jedi In 1983, Luke had only received storylines in books, novels or comics, and Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 resulted in almost every single one of those stories being implemented war of stars Legends or non-canon.

The focus of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is Luke Skywalker, but Mark Hamill only appeared in the role in one final scene, which gave a foretaste of “The Last Jedi”.

Therefore, The Last Jedi was under enormous pressure to tell a satisfying Luke Skywalker story. Not only was it the first Luke story since Return of the Jedi which itself raises expectations, but it had to provide logical explanations for The power Awakened‘ Establishment of his exile. Due to these factors, Luke Skywalker’s story in Episode VIII would be controversial either way. As it turned out, the guilt and shame surrounding his past with Kylo Ren proved incredibly divisive, as did Luke Skywalker’s eventual death in The last Jedi.

Luke Skywalker’s death in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was perfect

Many fans may consider Luke Skywalker’s death in The Last Jedi to be weak, but it was a poetically fitting conclusion to the character’s development.

The marketing of “The Last Jedi” did not sell the film for what it was

Through clever marketing, the true nature of the film was concealed, although a different film was sold than was actually shot

Kylo Ren asks Rey to accompany him in “The Last Jedi”

The divisive elements of Star Wars: The Last Jedi can be attributed to the marketing of the film. The various trailers for The Last Jedi are exceptionally manufactured, as are the trailers for The Force Awakens And The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm’s marketing has rarely been better, but The Force Awakens And The Last Jedi in particular have had some elements in their trailers that misled fans. The former was long criticized for positioning John Boyega’s Finn as the sequel trilogy’s Jedi before the film gave that honor to Daisy Ridley’s Rey.

Concerning The Last Jedithe marketing has not sufficiently highlighted the subversive nature of the film. For the most part, the marketing has been played relatively straight. Most of the story highlights are set, from Kylo and Snoke’s training and Luke and Rey doing the same, to War of stars’ classic dogfights, lightsaber sequences and stories of good versus evil. While references to the film’s subversive story were included, such as Luke’s line, “It won’t go the way you think,” The trailers have not yet made it clear how much the film’s story differs from the usual war of starswhich itself caused controversy.

Rian Johnson’s decisions were controversial

The subversiveness of The Last Jedi, of course, proved to be an element that many disagreed about

Speaking of The Last Jedithat wasn’t expressed in the trailers, many of writer-director Rian Johnson’s choices were criticized. As previously suggested, his handling of Luke Skywalker – from the character’s guilt and shame to his exile – was one such decision. This storyline, along with many others, simply fell under the umbrella of Johnson’s decision not to focus on theories that many had after the film. Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After two years of fan theories and discussions about the ongoing mysteries of the sequel trilogy, Johnson decided not to invest too much in solving these puzzles just to appease the fans.

Many of Johnson’s decisions proved controversial. For example, the majority of the theories after The Force Awakens about Rey’s parentage. Theories ranged from Luke or Leia as her parents to Rey as a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. In The Last Jedi, Johnson simply decided to make Rey nobody. She was portrayed as a character with no noble family or powerful bloodline, but rather someone simply called to fight the darkness, which was consistent with the film’s theme that anyone can be special. After years of theorizing, this choice proved to be inappropriate.

Snoke was summarily killed by Kylo Ren after little was revealed about his character, which turned out to be… one of many decisions Johnson made that some fans disagreed with.

Another major source of post-The Force Awakens Theories revolved around the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke. The villainous figure was only hinted at in Episode VIIwhich led many to expect that his story in The Last Jedi. Whether he was a Sith, a student of Palpatine or the reborn Darth Plagueis was answered in one way or another in The Last JediInstead, Snoke died. Snoke was summarily killed by Kylo Ren after little was revealed about his character, which – along with Rey’s parentage and Luke’s history – proved to be one of many decisions Johnson made that some fans disagreed with.

“The Last Jedi” did not meet expectations – and therefore caused controversy

Much of the controversy surrounding “Last Jedi” can be traced back to fan expectations

As is often the case in modern franchise filmmaking, fan expectations proved to be the main source Star Wars: The Last JediControversy. While fans have the right to theorize and speculate about unsolved mysteries, it is their responsibility not to place all their hopes and expectations on those theories. The Last Jedia large group of fans failed to live up to that responsibility. Theories and debates completely took over the fan base, and so the film was put under enormous pressure to answer those theories exactly as they had been created in the minds of the fans.

Of course, it should be noted that this problem is not only within the war of stars fanbase. The DCEU, the MCU and other major franchises that have faced division – like game of Thrones with their controversial endings – have all told stories that end differently than those presented in the theories and are therefore controversial. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was no different. Expectations for the answers to the mysteries of Luke, Rey, Snoke, and other characters were subverted, making it the most polarizing film in a galaxy far, far away.
