Women’s football continues active summer with West Coast transfer Marina Downing

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies women’s soccer association is strengthening its talent again this summer and announced the signing of striker Marina Downing.

Downing, a rising junior, brings aggressiveness and hard-hitting play to the program and has had a stellar career thus far. A native of Carlsbad, California, she was the state’s leading scorer as a member of La Costa Canyon High School. She also played a key role in the City SC youth soccer program, helping the team to a top-five ranking in the country.

She attended Eastern Washington for her first two college seasons, where she played in a total of 28 games and logged nearly 500 minutes on the court. The team scored a total of 35 goals last season, with Downing being part of the attack as she showcased her innate ability to run deep behind the opposing defense line to create scoring opportunities. In addition to being strong on the field, Downing is an All-Academic student with a 3.7 GPA and was named to the Big Sky Conference Fall Honor Roll twice.

“I am thrilled to welcome Marina to our team. She has had an impressive youth career and played for City SC in California, where her club was consistently ranked in the top 10 in the US Soccer Development Academy,” said Oakland head coach Devin Zvosec. “Marina’s competitive mentality and drive to score goals make her a great addition to our team. Her skills will fit seamlessly into our group of players and I look forward to seeing her contribute strongly to our attack this upcoming season.”

With this signing, the Golden Grizzlies will continue to place a strong emphasis on scoring next season and there is no doubt that the signing of Downing will strengthen Oakland’s offense for the foreseeable future.
